Silver bells...

When I was a child, Main Streets were still the place where everyone shopped. In those pre-mall days, the adults and and children spent allowances downtown. At Christmastime, the windows of the hardware store and the dime store, the office supply store, the drug store, the shoes store all had window decorated and lighted up. My sisters and I looked forward to seeing the decorations.

It would follow then, that I was quite excited to take my granddaughter walking along Main Street in a town nearby where I have been working of late. She came down with her granddad to a retirement reception for one of my co-workers. We were meeting friends for dinner and a musicale at the high school and had some time between those events to do some window shopping/gazing.
I'm not sure which of us enjoyed it more. I was happy to experience with her something I loved during when I was her age.

Some of the stores played music that sounded outside. I heard it but cannot really tell you what songs they played. In my mind, I was hearing the words from one of my favorite carols that we used to sing together:

Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks.
Dressed in holiday style
In the air
There's a feeling
of Christmas
Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on ev'ry street corner you'll hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas day

Strings of street lights
Even stop lights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush
home with their treasures

Hear the snow crunch
See the kids bunch
This is Santa's big scene
And above all this bustle
You'll hear
Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day
