Stanton Hall

Stanton Hall is a grand place. So much so that it is frequently used to depict all that is grand and historic in Natchez. If Hurricanes (the natural forces/disasters, not the drinks) have historically been female then historic houses all the more so. That to say, I am going to refer to Stanton Hall as a she and call her the cover girl for the Natchez Pilgrimage, the Garden Clubs and Natchez itself.
A grand dame, she is. From the fence that surrounds her (insured for an amount in the millions, I have been told) to the trim and moulding inside her walls, she is ornately dressed and richly appointed. She has starred in movies (most noteably as Patrick Swayze's home in the mini-series North and South.)
She continued plays hostess to weddings and balls.
Many of her appointments and accrouments are original works of art.
She is academic. For a while, after her builder's family moved on, she was a girls' school. The Stanton family furnishings were dispersed. By the time the garden club purchased the home and made it their headquarters, not a lot of the original trappings remained. Stanton heirs, working with the garden club have generously returned many of the things now reinstalled in the house. Old Paris China in the dining room, museum quality pieces of furniture commissioned for the house by its builder have now come back to their original home.
